It’s true what they say. Having a good role model can inspire you to make positive changes in your life, including taking the steps to manage your diet and lose weight safely.

And this is what Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is hoping to achieve with his latest weight loss campaign…

Teaming up with his brother, city councillor Doug and potentially the Mayor of Calgary, Ford is hoping that by publically displaying his campaign to lose weight that he will inspire and motivate local citizens to shape up as well.

But is he doing it for the right reasons?

When it comes to losing weight, nutritionists believe that the best role models are those who are choosing to lose weight to improve their health, friendships and family, NOT because someone is telling them to.

And this is true of you as a slimmer too…

Choose to lose weight for the wrong reasons, and you will find it harder to stick to your guns. Instead, doubts and temptations will seep in leaving you tempted to revert back to old habits.

How can I keep myself motivated?

Aside from finding yourself a good role model, whether it be a sibling or a celebrity such as Jennifer Hudson who has managed to lose 80lbs; there are other tools you can use to help you take control of your weight loss and stay on track:

  1. Make a list of reasons why you want to lose weight – there is nothing better than having a list to remind you of all the reasons you want to lose weight, when you are feeling low. These points will help you to refocus on your end goals, and keep you motivated towards losing weight.
  2. Surround yourself with support – it is easy to feel isolated when you’re losing weight, especially when everyone around you is enjoying the foods you no longer can have. But you don’t have to face your weight loss journey alone. Joining a fitness club, forum or getting your partner involved in your healthy eating plan can all help to relieve the pressure and offer you the support to keep going.
  3. Set small, achievable targets – don’t focus on the end game, but set yourself realistic weight losses of a couple of pounds a week. By treating your weight loss on a week to week basis, you’ll feel less overwhelmed and more focused on achieving this result.
  4. Reward yourself – for every 7lbs you lose, offer yourself the reward of a new outfit, shoes, meal out or spa day. Pick something you love to do – which is obviously not too expensive – and offer it as a reward whenever you reach a new milestone.

Staying motivated is probably one of the hardest things about losing weight, but as the above tips clearly prove, it is possible to remain in control of your diet and achieve your dreams of a slimmer you.

So take your first steps to a healthier you today, and make sure you are losing weight for the right reasons: for you. With the right support, you’ll never be lacking in motivation.
