You cannot be blamed for wondering what you have done wrong when you fail to replicate the same weight loss successes of your favourite celebrities.

Touting their newly trimmed, slim-lined bodies in the papers after following the latest dietary trend, it is impossible not to follow suite.

However, what these celebrities fail to tell you is that their miracle weight loss has come at a price… one which the average person cannot hope to copy.

Let us explain:

  1. Exercise – celebrities may be able to spend hours at the gym every day under the instruction of an expert fitness instructor; however you are not so fortunate. With such hectic lifestyles, most of us struggle to find 30 minutes a day to exercise let alone go to the gym for a minimum of 3 hours.
  2. Diet – the cabbage diet, the Master Cleanse, the Liquid Diet… the key to every one of these diets is the cutting of major foods groups and following a low calorie liquid diet.
Now these may be okay for a day or two, but the reality is your body cannot survive on such a low calorie intake. 500 calories a day is simply not enough. To function you need a minimum of 1, 200 calories, otherwise your body will go into starvation mode and stop burning fat for fuel, causing a plateau.
  3. Cravings – we are all subject to our cravings. Tell yourself you can no longer have bread, pasta or chocolate and the first thing you will crave is these foods. And unlike celebrities who have always got someone on hand to stop them reaching for a snack, you haven’t got someone to manage your food.
  4. Temporary – another thing celebrities fail to tell you when promoting a diet is that the results are only temporary. Most of this initial weight loss is a combination of water weight and some weight loss (triggered by eating too few calories). So whilst they may be able to help you to lose 15lbs in 2 weeks, once you return to your normal diet, this weight will be regained and then some.
  5. Not a long term solution – linking in to point 4, is the fact that none of these dietary fads can safely be done for too long. The problem is all of them deprive you of the nutrients and the calories you need in order to function.
Similarly, could you live on a continued liquid diet of water, lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper? No, of course you couldn’t. Aside from getting bored, this lack of nutrition will trigger cravings.

Taking all these points into consideration it is no wonder that many celebrity diets fail. From their temporary results to their lack of nutrition, you simply haven’t got the time to exercise all day.

However, this doesn’t mean you cannot successfully lose weight… No. You have just got to find the right dietary plan for you.

Take the following tips into consideration:

  1. Create a 500 calorie deficit – this is a deficit between the calories you consume and the calories you burn. To achieve this, split your meals into five 300 calorie portions and space them out over the day. This helps to boost your metabolism and prevent hunger/cravings as you are regularly eating in small amounts.
  2. Eat a balanced diet – it is important that you eat all your major food groups. Aim to split your meals 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 30% fat (and your other food groups).
  3. Exercise regularly – going on a 40 minute walk on your lunch every day can help you to burn 100s of calories. The trick is to find a balance between cardio and strength training, and to exercise for 30 minutes, 3 times a week.
  4. Swap your favourite foods for their low fat, low calorie alternatives – swapping full fat milk for semi-skimmed and a chocolate digestive for a small cookie can help you to cut calories without triggering cravings. Just remember to eat in moderation and you can still enjoy the occasional treat.

So give these tips a try and see how they can benefit your weight loss. They may not boast the same rapid weight loss results of celebrity diets, but at least you can be confident that you are losing weight safely and for the long term.
