Can water help you lose weight?

Many people know they should drink more water, but very few of them actually drink enough to encourage natural weight loss.

After all between 75% to 80% of our body is made of water, so naturally it is a major requirement for us to consume water. Water helps carry waste and toxins out of our system, and by not drinking enough, our bodies will not be efficient enough to remove the waste in our systems which can contribute to weight gain and bloating.

Water plays many important roles that can lead to weight loss:

Flushes out toxins

Your bodies natural process to remove toxins from its system requires water. As water flow through the body and out the other end, it carries out toxins which may otherwise poison the body and make slimming more difficult in the long run.

Body holds onto water when starved

A lot of excess weight and bloating in your system can come as a result of not drinking enougth water. As you starve your body of water, the body will hold on to more water and thus increase your weight unnaturally. It is only when you get into the habit of drinking plenty of water consistently that your body will begin to release the stored water.

Your body can be confused between hunger and thirst

When you are dehydrated, your body sends out a signal which is very similar to the signal to tell you that you are hungry. Therefore you can be in danger of answering your thirst with food, increasing your calorie consumption.

Water therefore has a natural effect of curbing hunger pangs and will help you feel fuller during meals. Many fitness experts would recommend that drinking a tall glass of water before a meal will help fill the void in your stomach and prevent overeating.

When you stop drinking, your metabolism is the first thing to shut down

Water is a essential process to many of your bodies' functions, and so when the water if withheld from the body, some of these functions begin to suffer.

One of the first functions to suffer is your metabolism. If you think about it this makes sense; a lack of water tells your body that it might be starved, and as a result will begin to slow down the metabolism to ensure its long term survival.

Often one of the reasons why people begin to feel like they can’t shift the weight whilst dieting, is because they are not supplying their body with the water it needs to keep the metabolism working.

So how much water should I be drinking?

The recommended amount of water you should drink is 8 glasses of water a day (just under 2 litres a day).

To make this goal a little easier, it is understood that other fluids can count towards this total, however be careful not to drink to many sugary soft drinks or alcoholic beverages, as you will need to drink EVEN more water to account for the extra toxins you are putting into your system.

Water AS PART of a complete slimming strategy

Of course, drinking water alone is not going to help you lose weight, but is certainly a major component of weight loss.

Drinking lots of water, steady exercise, eating right and sensible use of diet pills will ensure that you help you on your way to being slimmer and overall happier with yourself.
